Public Health Major


The Public Health Major curriculum is grounded by an interdisciplinary foundation of orientation and support courses that undergird a framework of core and concentration courses, culminated by intensive experiential learning in the capstone internship experience. Students must complete 14 course units in five categories:

1) Orientation Course (0 unit),

2) Public Health Support Courses (2 units),

3) Public Health Core Courses (7 units),

4) Public Health Concentration Courses (3 units),

5) Capstone Internship (1 unit) and Capstone Paper (1 unit).

  • Capstone Orientation is required to be completed at least 1-2 semesters before starting an capstone internship. Please contact Internship Coordinator for the schedule.
  • 120 hours of experiential education with an approved public health agency including Department of Health, Community-Based Organization, For-Profit Agencies, Clinic Sites (for pre-health professionals) and at TCNJ.
  • May be completed in Summer, Fall or Spring of the Senior year, or some combination with approval.
  • To the extent possible, student interests will be matched with internship sites.

Due to the emphasis on global health, Public Health majors must complete a second language through the third sequence (101,102 and 103). A natural science course from the options below and a statistics course (STA 115 or STA 215) also are required for the major and Liberal Learning.

Revision Advisory

The School of Nursing and Health Sciences on behalf of the Public Health major maintains the right and responsibility to revise content as appropriate in response to changes to accreditation requirements or other professional standards in the field.

CEPH Accreditation Update

We are happy to announce that on March 15, 2023, The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) Board of Councilors acted at its March 5-6, 2023 meeting to accredit the Public Health Program at The College of New Jersey for a five-year term. Based on CEPH procedures, TCNJ Public Health program’s initial accreditation date is recorded as March 13, 2020, the accreditation term extends until July 1, 2028. To see the official accreditation report from CEPH, please click here
